Eritrea & it's surprises

I need to write a full piece for Eritrea, these were musings enroute and just for now… Gallery

Just arrived at the end of my tour of Somali Land. Overnighting here in Addis Abbaba (Ethiopia) before heading off to Eritrea tomorrow. So far it has been hairy, hot, dusty and sweaty, so I Hope Eritrea is a little more enjoyable. Addis seems like another planet in comparison. Off to explore for a few hours before bed.

No direct flights between Addis and Asmara (due to the ongoing hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea) so I had to come home to Dubai to catch a flight back out. Just had time to cuddle my babies, pick up some clean undies and go to the sailing club for the latest goss and now I'm heading out again. This HAS to be better than Somali Land

Visiting Qohaito, a pre-Aksumite settlement on the edge of Africa's Great Rift Valley. Some Egyptian tombs, four pillars from an old temple and some cave paintings that I didn't see as I couldn't make it down and up the side of the mountain. Water, rather the lack thereof, is a huge problem in Eritrea. Need a shower? Improvise with a bucket of water and ladle to slop some cold, cloudy water over yourself. Sorted?

The unexpected highlight of Eritrea-a ride on the oldest train in Africa, what a thrill.
